Note all too often seal that are installed in older unit or units that are heavy with corrosion, the carrier area should be sandblasted and or wire brush. Once this is done the supporting area should be clean with lacquer thinner.
Then a coating of 609 or 680 Loctite retaining compound place on both seal and housing. Note if there is a large gap in between the two items up .030 you can still use parts you just need to apply compound and leave 24 hr and the re-coat parts just before assembly is put together.
Gaskets and o-ring should use Evinrude-Johnson gasket compound to seal shifter housings, stern drive or lower unit gearcases.
